How to measure your own instead of trusting this table
- Confirm the rifle is unloaded. Open the action, look into the chamber, and leave it open for the rest of this. Nothing that follows is worth doing on a loaded firearm.
- Measure the bell. Put a caliper across the widest part of the objective housing, not across the glass. This is the number that decides everything and it takes ten seconds.

- Check what the rail adds. A flat top receiver or a Picatinny rail already sits above the barrel, so the ring may need less height than a bolt action with bases mounted directly to the receiver. Test fit before you torque anything.
- Test fit with a dollar bill. With the scope resting in the bottom halves of the rings, slide a folded note between the bell and the barrel. If it passes freely you have clearance. If it drags, go up a height.
Why lower is better, up to the point where it is not
The goal is the lowest ring that clears, and the reason is your face. A scope mounted higher than it needs to be forces you to lift your cheek off the stock, which makes your head position different on every shot, which shows up as vertical stringing that looks exactly like a load problem.
Low also reduces sight height over bore, which shortens the distance the bullet spends climbing to your line of sight and flattens the near part of the trajectory.
